Gensuikyo , the Japan Council against A and H Bombs, recently sent a 16-member delegation to New York to submit a 1,029,031-signature petition calling for a total ban on nuclear weapons to the UN.

The petition, which was collected as part of a signature campaign in support of the “Appeal for a Total Ban on Nuclear Weapons”, began in February 2011. Signatures were collected throughout Japan, including notably the area surrounding Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, and signers included 44% of the country’s mayors.

The delegation called on governments to build consensus on the global need to ban nuclear weapons, urging the UN and member countries to pursue about the goals of disarmament and peace.
